We’ve installed a defibrillator at our Beeston Market development, giving vital emergency equipment to more than 300 people living in and around the village.
The device is already available to the 84 homeowners currently living on the estate, and will continue to serve residents moving into Phase 4, which brings a further nine homes, three apartments and a new shop to the site. Villagers, contractors and the builders completing the development will also be able to access it in an emergency.
The installation forms part of our wider commitment to supporting the communities we build in, and sits alongside the new on-site shop, which will likewise be open to the whole village once complete.
Claudia Dickens, Project Manager at Eaton Homes, said: “We understood the importance of having a defibrillator available for residents and our contractors, and felt we needed to make that purchase. It’s a vital piece of equipment that could save a life, and knowing it will remain in the community long after we leave the site makes the investment even more meaningful.”
A decision brought closer to home
The case for installing the equipment became personal following a health scare involving Micky, a long-serving and well-liked member of our team who has since retired. The defibrillator wasn’t needed for his own collapse, but his experience underlined just how much difference quick access to emergency equipment can make.
Micky was diagnosed with coronary heart disease and angina earlier this year, conditions that led to a triple heart bypass and a valve replacement. Looking back, he said a doctor later told him he’d suffered a minor heart attack after he collapsed, and that it brought home how important it is for anyone living or working around the Beeston site to have the right support close by if something similar were to happen.
Claudia added that watching a colleague go through something so serious made the team stop and think about what else they could do, and that installing a defibrillator was a natural next step, both to reassure Micky while he was still on site and to give everyone else working and living there added peace of mind.
Why access matters
More than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the UK each year, and survival rates can double or even triple when a defibrillator is close at hand. Making sure the Beeston community has that access reflects our broader approach to the areas we build in, wherever that may be.
“The community is at the heart of the area, and we feel strongly about supporting it wherever we can,” Claudia said. “Having a defibrillator on-site now, and later accessible in the village, gives real peace of mind for the future.”
